There is a lot about this piece I'm feeling at this time, Meg. Life in transition has me reflecting, planning, and revising what sustainable space and community means while figuring out my place in all of it. A timely read and reminder.

Thanks friend. I have been really struggling since last fall, and this has been helping me get through. Sending care and support your way.

I love this One Small Thing project. As a teacher, I try to design my classroom be a Third Space for my students, especially during these scary and chaotic times. May I help brainstorm a list of small things that school aged children can do when they are feeling overwhelmed? I’d like to involve my fifth grade students in the fall. Perhaps, you can create a One Small Thing section for kids and we can add to it throughout the school year.

Thanks for reading, Adrian! I love this idea. I'll definitely add a section for kids and talk to my own about this. Please keep me posted - look forward to hearing back from you!

I agree that voting isn’t enough. But everyone who cares still needs to vote. In fact, the problems with voting that you mention (gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc.) are all the more reason for us to work to achieve as high a turnout as possible in November. Not only for the President/VP (which is obviously very important), but for all of the congressional, state and local races that impact our daily lives.

P.S. I don’t think that either of your plans (going to the school if there’s an active shooter or doing one small thing every day) are crazy at all. It’s all about doing SOMETHING and not giving up.

I agree about voting, more for local/state races than anything, but I also know it's a limited tool for the reasons I mentioned. My focus here was on what we can do beyond that, because too many folks are voting and not taking other steps. And thanks for that - I have to do something. I hope other ppl will join me in that, because if we all do small things, it becomes something larger.

Megan, this is a really excellent post that touches on so many problems in the U.S. and abroad. The world itself has become dystopian. My daughter is in high school, and from the time she entered kindergarten, I've worried about school shooters. The problem will never go away. And shooters are everywhere: in grocery stores and other public places.

Like you, I try to do at least one good thing a day, and that thing involves art. My Substack focuses on art, particularly my oil painting creations. They help me hold onto sanity.
